About Rebecca

Extracted from an interview with House of Coco magazine

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?

The Grey Works was created in June 2012 after an inspirational visit to the Paris trade fair “Maison & Object”. I had not worked since the birth of my first child and was seeking a creative outlet outside the parameters of running a busy family home. My retail background and a love of interior styling came together and so it began.

Whats your background?

After studying fashion I became a Management Trainee in the (then)House of Fraser Flagship Deparment Store in Regent Street, London called Dickins & Jones. It was a fabulous experience and I loved it, they don’t train you like that anymore! I went on to manage a couple of the fashion floors and later set up one of the first personal shopping suites in the West End. I later moved on to manage in a couple of solus site stores before sidestepping into Fashion Retail Recruitment. I ended up with my own fashion recruitment business before stopping to concentrate on the family

If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?

I don’t think I could have. It really did just start very slowly and has grown organically along with the needs of the family. I am truly happy with our journey and our direction.

What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?

Retail can be a bit like gambling when it comes to stock management. You are constantly reinvesting and it can sometimes be a tough call in terms of whether you should or shouldn’t buy something

Where do you plan on taking the brand?

Our ethos is to be “ever evolving” and that is exactly what the business has done from day one. Every day is different and every day we progress. Long term we would like to be a well known Life & Style brand. We have just opened a store in Haywards Heath. We are just going with it.

Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?

They wouldn’t know about it for a reason!

To date, what has been the highlight since launching?

Definitely the website which was a long time coming. It took me out of my comfort zone but we have done it and we just need to keep tweaking it to keep it fresh.

Which city do you feel most at home in, London, Paris or New York?

London all day long. I lived in Central London for 12 years and it still feels like home

Style means....?

I think it is something you own. It cannot be taught.

Best thing about London to you?

London can be whatever you want it be and therein lies it’s charm. I have been both poor and wealthy in London and had amazing experiences at both ends of the scale. These days I am mostly in Mayfair where my husband has an office and I stay regularly at the very wonderful Café Royal Hotel for my “London Fix”. We now live in the countryside just outside Brighton so we are really lucky to have the best of both worlds

If you had to, what piece of clothing from your wardrobe would you wear everyday?

A leather biker jacket

Statement shoe or statement bag?

Hmmmmm I will go with bag. I have recently bought a Stella McCartney Falabella in (unsurprisingly) grey

Most memorable piece of advice given to you?

“Nothing good ever happens after midnight” By my husband Nick. Usually in an attempt to curtail my partying

Favourite love song?

“If you’re not the one” – Daniel Bedingfield

Guilty pleasure?

Watching ‘The Real Housewives” of pretty much any location. I am not fussy but favour Beverly Hills and New York

Best place for a coffee?

My store in Haywards Heath! We have an open plan kitchen area at the back so we can offer drinks to our customers

If you could spent 24 hours in anywhere in the world, where would it be?

The beautiful Virgin Gorda in The British Virgin Islands where we have spent so much time as a family. An incredible place that we hope receives all the help it needs to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Irma.

In future, how do you plan on expanding the company?

We have just opened a store in Haywards Heath, along with the website which feels like enough for today but let’s see how I feel tomorrow.
